01:22 pm - Comical
Pretty much my favorite thing to do after church is drive out to the comic book store. My old comics store was a dimly-lit hole on the empty top floor of a half-abandoned mall; this one is a nice storefront on a busy street, clean and open, with a staff that's not creepy at all. It's about four hundred times better, is what I'm saying. Today I picked up the first trade volume of House of Mystery along with issue #7, and Dead Irons #1.

House of Mystery is a horror anthology comic with a tie-together plot arc about a Milliways-Bar-esque house at the intersection of every dimension, more or less. The house has five permanent inhabitants and a huge cast of regular visitors, expies every one. (That's both a positive and a negative for me; I sort of enjoyed picking out who everyone was "supposed to" be, but I have strong feelings about comics that require you to be familiar with the full annals of the medium to understand them. See also: Why I stopped reading Books of Magic on page five.) I spotted part of the first issue on the late great scans_daily and loved it; when the library got the first volume my love extended to the whole thing. So I had to own it. Now I do. :)

Dead Irons is a weird-West thing with a very, very dark, sketchy art style, more action than dialogue (so far) and preachers so bad at their jobs they're actively satanic. I'm about done with the evil-priest trope, and the style just isn't my cup of tea, so I don't think I'll be following up on this one.

Apparently someone has reissued the first issues of Swamp Thing, Transmetropolitan, Preacher, and Planetary for free, under the "What to Read After Watchmen" banner. Was pleased to realize I'd already read all of them.

ETA: Oh, I almost forgot. Link from Unca Niel. Lols from the masters and the Comics Museum in Lucca.

Sounds like a good way to spend Sunday. Ever read Gutsville? The premise sounds interesting even if the issue release dates keep getting knocked around.
